I had the pleasure of having Professor Nikesha Stephens as my site evaluator for my emergency room rotation at Queens Hospital Center. Professor Stephens had kindly sent specific instructions before hand that should be included in our history and physicals, which included differentials after our history of present illness and then another set of differentials after our exam. We also needed to include patient information, which, I believe should be incorporated more often in history and physicals because many patients have questions about their treatment, even if it is simple laceration repair, patient’s are still concerned about the care that is needed, so I really appreciated taking the extra time to write up that information, so future patients can understand.
My classmate and I were scheduled to meet Professor Stephens at York college with one history and physical, and article and ten pharmacology cards. My site evaluation, for the most part, I believe, went smoothly. She first asked my about my pharmacology cards, which of course as always, I forget at the last minute, but also I did not prepare enough for them, so I naturally messed up on a couple of them. She then asked me to present my case, which was related to Steven Johnson Syndrome in a young female on Lamictal. I did not have the case memorized and Professor Nikesha Stephens was nice enough to let me read off my print out of the history and physical. I only focused on the pertinent positives for my presentation. I then presented my article; which I believe I could have done a better job in presenting. I believe I became nervous and did not present the article in a way that was chronologically appropriate. I was kind of all over the place and I did not say all the things that I would have liked to when presenting my article. Professor Nikesha Stephens then asked us about our site and if there was anything wrong with it that we would like to discuss. Professor Nikesha Stephens was overall very pleasant and a generous site evaluator.
As for the grade and feedback that I received from Professor Nikesha Stephens, I believe it was very appropriate and I appreciate the constructive criticism. I like it when people or instructors tell me specific problems with my work so I am able to solely focus on those problems and fix them. A lot of the time, I get generalized criticism and I don’t believe that it is helpful to me because the statements are so vague, it is nearly impossible for me to improve myself in that aspect without me changing myself as a person. Professor Nikesha Stephens made it very clear that I needed many clarifications in my history and physicals in order for me to become a better document-er. She gave me specific feedback regarding many aspects of my assignment, such as logical order, whether it was necessary to include certain information in the history of illness, and how to properly write out an assessment. I believe I earned the grade that I got, which I am happy with and I hope to have Professor Nikesha Stephens as a site elevator again soon.
